Thinking the Present

Thinking the Present was a series initiated by Machete Group members Alexi Kukuljevic and Gabriel Rockhill in conjunction with Marginal Utility Gallery Founders David Dempewolf and Yuka Yokoyama. The aim of the series was to develop a critical vocabulary to understand the practices of the present and the artistic movements that had contributed to them. As such, the series staged a number of critical encounters around topics of relevance to contemporary practice, such as Negation, Spectatorship, and Art and Politics. It also forced a reconsideration of legacies claimed to have been discarded: the Avant-Garde, Modernism and Postmodernism.  An archive of these events can be found at: http://www.marginalutility.org/category/seminars-machete-group/

A future collaboration with Marginal Utility Gallery about the relationship between artists and theorists is currently being planned.
