The Machete Group is a union of artists and intellectuals based in Philadelphia. The group organizes this blog, writes on activities in the art world, orchestrates performative symposia, participates in forms of public activism, stages motley interventions in the art world and is generally dedicated to rethinking the nature and practice of art itself. The guiding proposition of the Machete Group is that theory without practice is empty and practice without theory is blind. The goal of their work is to engender a rigorous and open atmosphere outside a strictly academic or market-driven context that encourages autodidacticism, a willingness to question all forms of authority, and the desire to think critically about the world that we have inherited.
